If you've never used a computer with a Dock you have to try the experience. A dock is much more than a simple taskbar, you will be able to create shortcuts to all your programs and you will see their icon.

When you move the mouse over the icon of a program it becomes bigger and if you click with the right button of the mouse you have access to all its information. You'll see clearly and visually which applications are launched from the dock without having to leave the application you're working on.
